This was the first of many times I’r seen Bob Mould. I had heard of Hüsker Du, but wasn’t familiar with the band. A friend of mine was friends with a promoter who got four of us on the guest list. I was working shitty jobs and had a hard time affording shows. Anyway, we went up to the balcony with the other guests, which was a first for me. I ended up sitting next to Oregonian music critic Marty Hughley. As the band took the stage he put in soft ear plugs. When he noticed I didn’t, he gave me a pair saying, “You’re gonna need these, kid.” It was probably the loudest show I’ve ever been to. Soul Asylum is a close second.
